-= INTRO =-
I decided to put this together after being asked questions about setting up a
bbs under Os/2 warp from several SysOps. Included in this file is SIO fossil
driver/Filebar (PMshell replacement) and misc files to get you started. I will
take you through the install of Os/2 all the way to getting your board up and
running. If you have any questions you can contact me at the address's at the
end of this doc. Or if you have some suggestions I would be more then happy to
update this archive. Even If you are running your BBS under Os/2 read on.
There are some tips here you might not know of.
-= INCLUDED IN THIS ARCHIVE =-
This is what should be in this archive.
1. SETUP.DOC <── The how to
2. SIO153.ZIP <── Sio fossil driver need DO TRY AND USE X00 or BNU
3. NODE1.INI <── INI file to control how your BBS will run
4. TELEGARD.DOC <── a how to for setting up Tg multi node.
5. FILEB205.ZIP <── Pmshell (Os/2's Front end shell like Program
manager for windows eck!) replacement
-= Disclaimer =-
This is a sick world when you have to add one of these so here it goes. This
archive is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, either expressed or
implied, and is only guaranteed to occupy disk space. In no event will the
author be liable to you or anyone else for any damages, including (but not
limited to) any lost profits, lost savings or other incidental or
consequential damages arising out of the use of, or inability to use, these
programs or documents. Blah blah blah.....
-= ABOUT MY SYSTEM =-
First off I should explain a little about my system so you can understand the
settings I came up with. I have a 486dx100 hippo DCA² (DynamiCache
Architecture - 2nd generation) with 4 meg hardware cache. 16 mags ram, 2 hard
drives with a total of 1.7 gig and a mountain 7cd changer. This mother board
is the one to get if you are in the market. It was designed for use as a
network server. And it's great with multi tasking. You can add up to 32 megs
of cache and 64 megs of dram. You can buy this mother board from MicroMax.
You'll find them in computer shopper around page 400 give or take 30 pages. It
cost about $200 for the mother board, you will also need to buy at least one
cache simm that will cost about $180. So if some of these settings are a
little much you can tone them down bit.
-= HOW TO INSTALL Os/2 =-
Ok lets get started, this is how I suggest you install Os/2. This way will
keep things little more organized on your hard drive. If you have a tape
backup use it before going on. I can not stress this enough. If not buy one,
steal one or use a null modem cable to copy every thing to a 2nd computer. Now
if you don't have a MSDOS boot disk you will need to create one. To do this
insert a formatted empty disk in drive A: and from c: drive type sys a: .
After that is done copy fdisk and format to your a: drive and reboot. Type
fdisk and delete your partition. WARRING by doing this you will loose every
thing on your hard drive. Now you will want to create 2 new partitions. The
first one you want to create is a dos primary partition of 80 megs. This is
were you will install dos and Os/2. and now make a second partition (Dos
extended) using the rest of your hard drive. When you're done fdisk will
reboot your computer. Next you will want to format your new partitions. To
make your new c: drive bootable type format c: /s. Next format drive d: but
with out the /s switch. You will want to install dos now after witch Os/2.
When installing Os/2 Use the expert install and use c: drive with Dos fat. I
do not recommend using the HPFS (high performance file table) file system.
Reason why, If your MBR ( master boot record) or partitions get corrupted you
are basicly screwed plus HPFS uses a couple hundred more k ram. Also you will
need a Os/2 tape backup software to back up your computer. If you have the
software and the ram install it, HPFS is better then a dos fat. There is less
fragmentation and much more I don't want to go into.
-= INSTALLING YOUR SHELL PROGRAM =-
The reason for using a shell replacement is PMshell uses a lot of ram. And you
want your ram used for your bbs not Os/2. I highly recommend using FileBar as
your PMshell replacement. I have been using Os/2 for a long time and have
tried several other shell replacement programs. And Filebar is the best hands
down. Ok first you will need to make a dir for filebar then copy fileb205.zip
to that dir and fully unzip it. next you need to copy filebar.dll to \os2\dll.
Next edit your config.sys and rem or delete the line set
Runworkplace=C:\OS2\PMSHELL.EXE. And insert this line set
runworkplace=c:\filebar\filebar.exe (replace c:\filebar\ with the drive dir
that you unzipped filebar into).Ok now close your dos window and open a Os/2
window goto your filebar dir and type install. Now that you are done with this
part close all windows and shut the system down for reboot. Please read the
docs for filebar there is a lot of useful info in there. If your system does
not boot correct you might have missed a step and will need to read your Os/2
book on how to make your system boot correct and do this part again.
-= INSTALLING SIO =-
This part is quick and easy. Goto the command prompts a select Os/2 full
screen. Make a dir sio and copy sio153.zip to that dir and unzip it. Next type
install. Then edit your config.sys and find the line device=c:\sio\sio.sys you
will need to make some changes to it. This is only an example you will need to
change this for how you have your modems setup. At the end of that line you
will need to add what comports you have your modems on and the locked baud
rate. It should look something like this device=c:\sio\sio.sys (2:38400)
(3:38400). Inside the quotes is (Comport:locked baud). You will need to add
this for all modems on that line. Now add a line after device=c:\sio\vsio.sys.
In this line you need to type in device=c:\sio\vx00.sys. What this does is
enable the fossil driver for your dos sessions. Save your config.sys and exit
the window and goto task list and shut the system down. Reboot and make sure
every thing works ok. Read the siouser.txt for more info on sio.
-= THE CONFIG.SYS =-
You will need to add or change the following settings. I suggest only making
one or two changes before saving and reboot. So you don't have to hunt down
bugs.
1. IFS=C:\HPFS.IFS /CACHE:64 /CRECTL:4
If you are using HPFS drives you can leave this alone. If not rem or delete
this line.
2. SET AUTOSTART=FOLDERS,PROGRAMS,TASKLIST
